Why net worth beats income

A high salary does not mean you are building wealth. Net worth shows the result of every decision together: what you saved, what you invested, and what you borrowed. It is the one number that tells you whether you are moving forward.

What to include

Assets: bank balances, fixed and recurring deposits, mutual funds and shares at current value, PPF, EPF and NPS balances, gold, property and vehicles. Liabilities: the outstanding amount (not the EMI) on home, car, personal and education loans, plus credit card dues and money you owe friends or family.

Keep it current

Balances change every month. Tracking net worth over time is far more useful than a one-off number — that is exactly what HonorFlow does from the accounts and investments you record.

Questions

What is net worth?

Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. If your savings, FDs, funds, PPF, gold and home add up to ₹60 lakh and your loans and card dues total ₹25 lakh, your net worth is ₹35 lakh.

Should I include my house in net worth?

Yes — at today’s realistic resale value, not the purchase price — and subtract the home loan still outstanding. Many people also look at net worth without the house they live in, because it is hard to turn into cash.

How should I value gold?

Multiply the grams you hold by today’s buy-back rate for that purity (usually a little below the market price). For jewellery, count only the gold content, not making charges.

What is a good net worth by age in India?

There is no single number. A useful check is the trend: net worth should rise every year, and debt should be falling as a share of what you own.

How often should I calculate net worth?

Once a month is enough. Monthly snapshots show whether saving, investing and paying down loans are actually moving you forward.
