12% is a common long-term equity SIP assumption, not a promise

Chai costs ₹14,600 a year. Investing 50% of it could grow to ₹6,07,815 in 20 years.

Small spends, big numbers

Two cups of chai a day at ₹20 is ₹14,600 a year. Nobody notices ₹20, but everybody notices ₹14,600. This calculator makes the invisible visible, then shows what happens if you redirect part of it into a monthly investment instead.

Why the jar fills faster later

Invested money earns returns, and those returns earn returns of their own. In the early years the jar is mostly what you put in; in the later years growth does most of the work. That is why the same habit looks modest over 5 years and dramatic over 25.

Keep the joy, trim the autopilot

The goal is not to give up everything you enjoy. It is to notice the spends you make on autopilot, keep the ones that matter, and let the rest build something for later.

Questions

How does the habit calculator work?

It multiplies what one purchase costs by how often you buy it to get a yearly cost. Then it takes the share you choose to cut back, invests it every month as a SIP at the return you pick, and shows what that could grow to.

Is 12% a realistic return?

It is a common long-term planning assumption for diversified equity mutual funds, not a promise. Returns vary year to year and can be negative. Try 7–8% for a cautious case.

Do I have to give up the habit completely?

No. Most people keep the habit and trim it — chai from the office machine on some days, or cooking one more night a week. Even a 25% cut shows a surprising number over 15–20 years.

Are the “that’s about” comparisons exact?

No, they use rough 2026 prices just to make big numbers easier to picture. Gold, phones and holidays will cost more by the time your money has grown.

Is anything I type saved?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.
